Stay Away From These Foods If You Have Thyroid Disorder

Thyroid glands are found at the base of the neck and they play a very big role in the metabolic processes of the body by producing certain hormones. A number of people have thyroid disorders; this can be an enlarged gland that doesn’t need any treatment or others that can lead to cancer.

Women stand at a higher risk of developing thyroid diseases especially after menopause or after pregnancy. The most common thyroid problem includes the abnormal production of chemicals known as thyroid hormones. Depending on the amount produced, these hormones can lead to weigh loss, weight gain, restlessness and fatigue.

When the thyroid produce too much hormones, it leads to a condition known as hyperthyroidism; insufficient production of the same hormones causes hypothyroidism. These are manageable conditions but there are certain foods that you should not eat to avoid triggering your thyroid disorder.

Fried and Fatty Foods

If you have a thyroid disorder, you should avoid fried and fatty foods because the high fat content disrupts the body’s ability to take-in thyroid hormone replacement drugs. They also interfere with your thyroid’s ability to produce hormones.

Sugar

Hypothyroidism causes metabolism to slow down and this can lead to weight gain. If you have this condition, stay away from sugary foods because they have plenty of calories and almost no nutrients.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli are good for the body but those with thyroid problems experience health challenges from them. These vegetables interfere with the thyroid's ability to take-in iodine, a substance that keeps the thyroid functioning properly. Limit your intake of cruciferous vegetables such as kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and turnips.

Soy

Stay away from soy because it interferes with the thyroid hormone in people with hyperthyroidism. Processed forms of soy are the worst; stick to the fermented forms but only use in small quantities.

Coffee

Drinking too much coffee affects your adrenal glands and this can lead to fatigue and thyroid problems. This drink also makes your thyroid hormone replacement drugs less effective.

Gluten

Those with thyroid problems should stay away from foods with gluten to avoid worsening of their condition.
