Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a metabolic disorder that involves high blood sugar levels over time. There are two types of diabetes and they are:

Diabetes type 1- this is a disease that arises when the body’s immune system starts to attack the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. People with this type of diabetes do not produce insulin and they must take insulin injections to manage this condition.

Diabetes type 2- this type of diabetes is linked to lifestyle or hereditary factors. This condition can be managed through making lifestyle changes or insulin shots. This condition affects people over the age of forty but people way younger are also being affected.

Warning Signs of Diabetes

There are a number of symptoms associated with diabetes but some can be mild and even unnoticeable especially in type 2 diabetes.

Common signs of type 1 diabetes include dry mouth, itchy skin, fatigue, hunger, frequent urination and blurred vision. You might also experience a condition called polydipsia or an increase in the intake of fluid. When you drink lots of fluids, the urinary tract gets more fluids leading to increased urination. When the fluid is excreted in the body often, you become thirstier leading to dry mouth and itchy skin.

Fatigue and hunger are also danger signs of diabetes. When you eat food, it is turned into glucose and this is used by the body as energy. However, your cells need insulin for the glucose molecules to get into the cells. In a person with diabetes, the body does not have enough insulin or the cells resist the insulin from the body. This means that the glucose doesn’t make it into the cells to make energy. The result will be hunger stimulated by the brain and fatigue.

You should lead a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly to prevent diabetes.
