Iron is a really important mineral for the body especially for the production of red blood cells. These cells carry oxygen to your organs, tissues and cells and if you don’t have enough iron in your body, the effects will be detrimental.

According to experts, women are more prone to iron deficiency than men. Fortunately, this can be easily fixed by taking iron supplements. Also, there are many foods that have high iron content. The question is, how can you tell that you don’t have enough iron in your system? Here’s how:

You’re Always Tired

Lack of enough iron in your body means that your tissues won’t have enough oxygen and this results in exhaustion.

You will Have Shortness of Breath

Since you’re red blood cells (RBC) are responsible for carrying oxygen in the body, having low iron means that you won’t have enough RBC to transport oxygen. You will notice shortness of breath when doing regular activities like walking or climbing the stairs.

Heart Racing

When you don’t have enough oxygen in your body, your heart will try to compensate by pumping blood at a faster rate. This is not good especially if you have a heart condition.

You’ll Look Pale

When your body has low red blood cells, the skin looks pale. Also, check the inside of your lip and lower eyelids, if they are pale, you definitely need more iron.

When You Start Craving Weird Stuff

When you start craving non-nutritive items such as chalk, dirt or ice, it means that you have “pica”, a symptom in people with low iron.

Bad Headaches

When your brain doesn’t have enough oxygen, you will experience headaches. You may also experience cases of light-headedness and severe hair loss.

You will Experience Frequent Infections

Iron keeps your immune system in good levels. If you start getting frequent colds and flu it is because you’re not having enough iron rich foods.
