Diarrhea Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

You have diarrhea if you experience three or more bowel movements a day. This conditions lasts for a few days but should be quickly treated to avoid dehydration.

Causes of Diarrhea

This condition is caused by the irritation of the gastrointestinal tract by microbes. You can get microbes from eating contaminated foods and drinks, eating with dirty hands and overall poor hygiene.

Signs and Symptoms

Loose and watery stool is a common symptom of diarrhea and is usually accompanied by pain and cramps in the abdomen, stomach bloating, urgent need to go to the toilet, and blood in the stool.

If this condition does not go away after two days, or you get severe stomach and rectal pain, seek immediate medical care. You should also see a doctor if you experience fevers, dehydration leading to dry mouth, increased thirst and swollen tongue, dizziness, weakness, fainting and confusion.

Home Remedies

You can buy medication to treat diarrhea but there are home remedies that manage this condition with ease:

Yogurt

This drink has good bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium that fight the microbes that cause diarrhea. Take two bowls of yogurt every day to fight this condition.

Sports Drinks

This condition causes dehydration and if it’s not checked, the body’s energy levels can go down and this can lead to shock and death. These types of drinks are good because they have salt and sugar content that allows water to be easily absorbed.

Avoid Certain Foods

If you have diarrhea, stay away from carbonated drinks, soda, alcohol, milk and caffeinated drinks because they will worsen your problem. also avoid pepper, corn, broccoli, peas, beans, chickpeas, prunes as they may cause bloating.
